Charity$$$ if you have the means$$$ is a personal choice$$$ but charity which is expected or compelled is simply a polite word for slavery.
Allow me to tell you$$$ Mr Taylor$$$ said I$$$ but quietly as the occassion demanded$$$ "that one gentleman does not rejoice at the misfortune of another in public".
To me$$$ Lord of the Flies has always represented what novels are for$$$ what makes them indispensible. Should we expect to be entertained when we read a story? Of course. An act of the imagination that doesnt entertain is a poor act indeed. But there should be more. A successful novel should erase the boundary-line between writer and reader$$$ so they can unite. When that happens$$$ the novel becomes a part of life the main course$$$ not the dessert. A successful novel should interrupt the readers life$$$ make him or her miss appointments$$$ skip meals$$$ forget to walk the dog.
We think we know. "Know? That's worse than an atom bomb$$$ and always was."
Yet I was wound up. I tick. I exist. I am poised eighteen inches over the black rivets you are reading$$$ I am in your place$$$ I am shut in a bone box and trying to fasten myself on the white paper. The rivets join us together and yet for all the passion we share nothing but our sense of division.
If only one had time to think!
But nobody else understands about the fire. If someone threw you a rope when you were drowning. If a doctor said take this because if you don't take you'll die - you would$$$ wouldn't you?
The beast was harmless and horrible; and the news must reach the others as soon as possible.
Even a stone has its uses$$$ and man who is the most intelligent of all creatures must be of some use$$$ hasn't he?
Countless as the sands of sea are human passions$$$ and not all of them are alike$$$ and all of them$$$ base and noble alike$$$ are at first obedient to man and only later on become his terrible masters.
